Paul is answering the objection that if we are saved by grace, not law, what is to keep us from going on sinning? Don't we need the Law to keep us in line, or more theologically speaking, "sanctify" us? Paul says it is the new resurrected life that changes us. It is important to recognize that we are not "under" the Law, but that the Spirit of God, the Lawgiver, lives within each person who has received Christ, giving us new desires and new power. (See Philippians 2:13) That working of the Holy Spirit casts the whole Word of God in a joyful new light. Only the regenerated child of God can honestly say, "I joyfully concur with the Law of God in the inner man (Rom. 7:22), and "O how I love your Law! It is my meditation all the day!" (Psalm 119:97)Thomas L. The law is the standard of holiness, and I don't believe that God would ever change his standard, but seeing as we are all sinners and have fallen short of the glory of God, we need Christ. If we could ever complete the law in our own strength, if it were ever possible, then Christ would have had no reason to die for us except to save those too lazy to save themselves. The truth however is that no matter how hard we try we fall short, so I think that rather than letting that discourage us we should become all the more aware of the holiness of God and the depth of his mercy toward us in providing that one Way by his blood on the cross. The law shows us how short we fall, and I think it deserves some attention, because it shows us how much we need Jesus, it points us back to him. As a friend of mine said "The more Law I read, the more Christ I need."Martin L.
